EMERGENT ISSUES CONFRONTING THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS IN NIGERIAN PRIMARY SCHOOLS.

DR. (MRS) OLADAYO, C. E.

Abstract

The primary school is the foundation upon which every other educational level depends. Mathematics is the subject that every nation needs for a successful scientific and technological growth. The study therefore investigated the emergent issues confronting the effective teaching and learning of mathematics in Nigerian primary schools. Two objectives, two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The survey research design was employed. The population comprised of all primary school teachers in the South-South Geo-political zone of Nigeria. A simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of eighteen (18) primary schools (three primary schools from each of the six states that make up the South South Zone). A twenty-item researcher constructed questionnaire titled Mathematics Teaching Questionnaire in Primary Schools (MTQPS) was used to collect data.
