Dynamical behaviour of radio refractivity in Akure, Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract
Chaos has been investigated in the surface radio refractivity data over Akure, Southwestern Nigeria using the Brock-Dechert-Scheinkmen (BDS) test. The data were obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis data for a space of eleven years (January 2004 to December 2014). The computed radio refractivity calculated was then examined for chaos using the BDS statistics. The BDS statistics test can be applied to a series of refractivity values to check whether the refractivity values are independently and identically distributed. It was observed that the BDS values in the rainy seasons were lower than the threshold of 1.96 while that of the dry season were higher than 1.96. This means that during the dry season surface radio refractivity are in a state of chaos. This shows that the dynamics of radio refractivity in the troposphere is of fundamental importance in planning, budgeting and prediction of communication links.
